Smart Food Shopping on a Budget
By Hescott Nutrition Services | posted in December, 2019 | Food Waste, Healthy, Smart Food Shopping, Budgeting, Farmer's Market
Finding ways to stretch your hard-earned dollars can often be challenging in today's economy, but do not be discouraged! Here are 10 smart food shopping ideas:
1. Keep it simple! Create a weekly meal plan that supports your food list.
2. Before you go food shopping, make sure you write a list of all your food items.
3. Buy fresh produce and fruits in season from your farmer's market or local supermarket.
4. Look for coupons on various websites and in the Sunday newspapers only for the items on your shopping list. Clipping coupons will certainly reduce your food cost.
5. Make sure to buy the exact amount of food products in order to reduce food waste.
6. Join a Community-Supported agriculture (CSA) farm share program which is a great way to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your family's meals at a low-cost.
7. At your farmer's market visit, be sure to negotiate your food item prices, especially if you are there near to closing time.
8. Buy legumes in their uncooked form for they are often inexpensive than the packaged and processed versions.
9. Make sure you eat before going to food shop, to avoid buying food items that are not on your shopping list.
10. To get the most out of your purchase, enjoy cooking your food in various ways. For example, the same raw apple you ate for breakfast with your cereal, you can also bake another one with cinnamon for dinner.
